When talking about musicians and actors most people think of wishy-washy hippy types, with a knack for disorder and a loose handle on their finances. But in a legally complicated and competitive industry, savvy artists have become the new entrepreneurs and we are thriving. What is it about artists that make the switch to entrepreneur so successful?
We are creative
It’s a given, artists are creative. We have ideas coming out of our ears and we have never fitted into societal ideals. This gives us a unique perspective of the world that allows us to look beyond current thinking and create new and exciting businesses.
We know how to sacrifice
We have never had financial security and we have worked long and unsociable hours for little return. We know how to work hard, we practice daily so we are prepared when an opportunity arises.
We can manage money
We don’t have clue when and if we are going to get the next pay check but always find ways to make the rent. We have learnt not worry, to save when times are good, to put money a side for the important things and that tinned peaches and rice can be an adequate meal.
We know how to deal with rejection and failure
In an industry where only 8% of the registered actors are in work at any one time, we understand failure. We go to auditions daily, we gig for no money, we practice and train and hone our craft. We understand that every job that we don’t get is an opportunity to learn and to become better at what we love doing.
We follow our instincts
We don’t do anything that we don’t love. Our life is about doing what makes us happy and we are adept at following our instincts. This means whatever we build is more about making the world a better place and less about money, and ironically if you build what the world needs money seems to come along with it.
We are shameless self promoters
We love being in the lime light, and are not afraid to tell the world what we are doing. After all, self-promotion is one of the most beneficial marketing tools that entrepreneurs have at their disposal and how else will people know what we are selling?
We understand people
Artists spend there lives trying to express the human condition. We are emotive and understanding. We know what makes people tick and we use that to make fantastic pieces of art. Apply that to business and you have something quite special.
We love learning
In a competitive industry it is vital to spend a lot of time and money practicing and improving. We aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty.
We are already entrepreneurs
The definition for an entrepreneur is “a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit”. To be successful in any arts industry you have to present yourself as a business, you have to market, you have to come up with new and exciting ideas and products and you have to put in a lot of time and money. Artists are already entrepreneurs.
